How Often Should You Trim Your Dog's Nails? A Breed-by-Breed Guide

The Golden Rule of Dog Nail Care

If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on the floor, they're already too long. Overgrown nails affect posture, cause joint pain, and can curl back into the paw pad if left unchecked. But how often is often enough?

General Guidelines

Most dogs need nail trimming every 2–4 weeks. However, this varies significantly based on breed, activity level, and the surfaces your dog walks on.

By Activity Level

  • High activity (daily pavement walks): Every 4–6 weeks — pavement naturally files nails down
  • Moderate activity (mix of grass and pavement): Every 3–4 weeks
  • Low activity (mostly indoors or grass): Every 2–3 weeks

By Breed

Small Breeds (Chihuahua, Dachshund, Shih Tzu)

Small dogs often have faster-growing nails and spend more time indoors. Trim every 2–3 weeks. Their small nails are ideal for a nail grinder on the lowest speed setting.

Medium Breeds (Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie)

Trim every 3–4 weeks. Active medium breeds who walk on pavement may stretch this to 5–6 weeks.

Large Breeds (Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever)

Trim every 3–4 weeks. Large breeds have thicker nails that can be harder to clip — a high-powered grinder handles these with ease.

Giant Breeds (Great Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard)

Trim every 2–3 weeks. Giant breed nails grow quickly and their weight means overgrown nails affect their gait and joint health significantly. Use a heavy-duty grinder with multiple speed settings.

Double-Coated Breeds (Husky, Malamute, Chow Chow)

Trim every 3–4 weeks. These breeds often have dark nails — an LED nail grinder is especially helpful for seeing the quick.

Signs Your Dog's Nails Are Too Long

  • Clicking sound on hard floors
  • Nails visibly curling
  • Dog shifting weight or limping
  • Nails touching the ground when standing
  • Reluctance to walk on hard surfaces

Set a Reminder

The easiest way to stay on schedule is to set a recurring phone reminder. Pair nail trims with another routine — like bath day or a weekly brushing session — so it becomes automatic.
