Not All Collars Are Created Equal
A collar is more than an accessory — it's a safety device, a training tool, and a daily comfort item your dog wears for most of their life. Choosing the wrong collar can cause neck injuries, escape risks, and unnecessary discomfort. Here's how to get it right.
Step 1: Measure Your Dog's Neck
Use a soft measuring tape and measure around the base of your dog's neck where the collar will sit. Add 2 inches for comfort. The two-finger rule: you should be able to slip two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck — snug enough to stay on, loose enough to be comfortable.
Collar Types by Breed Size
Small Breeds (Under 20 lbs)
Look for lightweight collars with smaller hardware. Flat buckle collars in soft leather or nylon work well. Avoid heavy metal hardware that can strain small necks. Width: 3/8” to 5/8”.
Medium Breeds (20–50 lbs)
Standard flat collars or martingale collars work well. Width: 3/4” to 1”. Leather collars are an excellent choice for durability and comfort.
Large Breeds (50–100 lbs)
Prioritize durability and secure hardware. Full-grain leather collars with robust D-rings and buckles are ideal. Width: 1” to 1.5”. Consider a martingale for dogs who back out of collars.
Giant Breeds (100+ lbs)
You need maximum strength. Look for wide, thick leather collars with heavy-duty hardware. Width: 1.5” to 2”+. Our Bestia collection is specifically designed for large and giant breeds with reinforced stitching and premium European leather.
Collar Types Explained
- Flat collar: Everyday wear, ID tags, leash attachment. Best for well-trained dogs.
- Martingale: Tightens slightly when pulled — prevents escape without choking. Ideal for Greyhounds and dogs with narrow heads.
- Harness: Distributes pressure across the chest — better for dogs with respiratory issues or pulling problems.
- Training collar: For structured training sessions only, never for everyday wear.
Material Matters
European full-grain leather is the gold standard. It's durable, develops a beautiful patina over time, is gentle on skin, and lasts years longer than synthetic alternatives. Our Bestia and Aztec collections use only premium European leather — built to last a lifetime.
