How to Choose the Right Dog Collar Size

The Perfect Fit Makes All the Difference

A collar that's too tight can restrict breathing and cause skin irritation. Too loose, and your dog can slip out — a dangerous situation on any walk. Getting the right size is one of the most important things you can do for your dog's comfort and safety.

Step 1: Measure Your Dog's Neck

Use a soft measuring tape and wrap it around the base of your dog's neck — where the collar naturally sits. Add 2 inches to that measurement for the ideal collar size. This gives enough room for comfort without being loose enough to slip off.

The two-finger rule: Once the collar is on, you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the collar and your dog's neck. If you can fit three or more, it's too loose. If you can't fit one, it's too tight.

Step 2: Know Your Dog's Breed Tendencies

  • Narrow-headed breeds (Greyhounds, Whippets) — need martingale-style collars that tighten slightly to prevent slipping
  • Large, muscular breeds (Rottweilers, Mastiffs) — need wide, heavy-duty collars like our Bestia "Buffalo" Heavy Duty Collar
  • Small breeds (Chihuahuas, Yorkies) — lightweight, narrow collars to avoid neck strain

Step 3: Choose the Right Width

Collar width should be proportional to your dog's size. A general guide:

  • Under 10 lbs — ⅜ to ½ inch wide
  • 10–25 lbs — ½ to ¾ inch wide
  • 25–60 lbs — ¾ to 1 inch wide
  • Over 60 lbs — 1 to 1.5 inches wide

Step 4: Pick the Right Material

For everyday wear, European leather is the gold standard — durable, soft on skin, and ages beautifully. Our Bestia "Rocky" Collar and Bestia "Boston" Collar are handcrafted from premium European leather, designed to last years with proper care.

When to Re-Measure

Puppies grow fast — check the fit monthly. Adult dogs should be re-measured if they gain or lose weight significantly. A well-fitted collar is a small detail that makes a big difference every single day.
